Georgia requires a Board-approved pre-licensing seminar before you can get a used car dealer license. It is a one-day, in-person class of about four hours with no test. Your certificate is valid for one year, it is in your personal name, and you can take it while you wait for your business to be registered.
What it is
The pre-licensing seminar is a required class taught by Board-approved providers. It runs about four hours in one day, in person, and there is no test. At the end you receive a certificate of completion that you submit with your application. Pricing varies by provider; one provider lists about $159.
When to take it
You do not need to wait for your business registration or your Certificate of Organization. You can enroll and take the class while your company is still being processed. Apply within a year, because the certificate is valid for one year.
Personal name, not business
The class and your certificate of completion are under your personal name. No business name is required.
What you learn
- Georgia dealer laws and the basics you must know.
- The application steps and what comes next.
- Compliance and staying out of trouble.
- Common forms you will use. You also take home a booklet.
Why to pay attention
Other businesses often show up at the seminar: surety bond providers, garage liability insurance providers, brokers, office providers and other professionals. You can gather contacts for most of what you need for the next steps, so take notes and collect contact information.
Find a seminar
You may use a different educator if you prefer, as long as the seminar is Board approved. Online-only classes are reportedly not accepted, so confirm the class is in person.
Amounts and rules change. Confirm current requirements with the Georgia State Board of Registration of Used Motor Vehicle Dealers at (404) 424-9966 before you pay for anything.
