To buy at dealer auctions in Georgia you first need your dealer license and your master tag number, which appears as the customer ID on your tag registration. You use it to sign up for Auction Access. Once you are in, you register with individual auctions. Beginners should always preview cars in person before bidding.
The order of steps
- Receive your dealer license. You cannot start buying right away; you must wait for it.
- Get your master tag number. After you register for dealer plates, your master tag number appears as the customer ID on your tag registration.
- Sign up for Auction Access using that number.
- Register with individual auctions inside Auction Access.
Auction Access
Auction Access is the system many dealer auctions use to verify licensed dealers. As of now, CarMax Auto Auction is reported to be separate from Auction Access. Sign up at auctionaccess.com once your license and master tag number are ready.
Where to start
Once you are registered with Auction Access, you will see a long list of available auctions. Good starter auctions that are easy to look at include AutoNation Auto Auction and Greater Atlanta Auto Auction, among others. Manheim is usually the last auction you should check out: many new dealers go there first and end up buying poor inventory.
Preview in person
As a beginner, always preview the car in person before you bid, at any auction. Once you are experienced and know what to look for, you can start buying online.
- Check the title status and history.
- Inspect the body, interior, engine and tires.
- Know the car's market value before you bid.
- Include fees and repairs in your maximum bid.
